Football in the Philippines has undergone massive changes since the miracle run of the Azkals at the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, no doubt that these changes have affected the Philippine Air Force given that it is a Club where the players are soldiers first, and that it is not a commercial enterprise. Entering this season after an generally average League campaign in 2012 and a bloody UFL Cup group stage elimination, the status of the Philippine Air Force Football Team as the premiere club of the Philippines for Filipinos has been threatened. Given these circumstances, a new 3 year plan has been crafted by no less than the Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force to rebuild the entire team through a massive injection of local youth standouts, and the sending of some of the veteran players and coaching staff to temporarily resume their Military careers after many years of postponing it to help build Philippine Football.
The mandate of the Armed Forces teams has always been to support local talent and to always be there for the National Team in whatever capacity. With the changing demographic and financial situation of United Football League, the Air Force rises to the challenge. The team enters this season with a huge task of integrating more than a dozen new players hailing from Pampanga, Bacolod, Iloilo, Davao and Cotabato among others, and transitioning the retirement and re-shuffling of the old guard, most notably the departure of stalwart Chieffy Caligdong to Green Archers United. We see the entrance of 2 new Goalkeepers in Kenneth Dolloso and Amay Sobrevega, and numerous local field players such as Antonio Albor, Francis Gustilo, Vince Braga and the Vergara brothers. Much will be expected from the leadership of "now veterans" Ian Araneta and Joebel Bermejo, 12 years after first coming to the Air Force as younglings with huge potential.
This team\'s purpose is to bring back the core values of the Philippine Air Force, "Faster, Stronger, Better". The Philippine Air Force will give it their all, fighting to prove that local talent will always have its place among elite Club Football, and continuing in its mission to bring Football to the provinces and local talents a chance to fly high. With a strong fan base in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and the revitalized management direction, the 2013 campaign will prove to be very interesting for Philippine Football through the UFL, as Air Force flies the flag.
