Global, Kaya seek UFL glory

It will be a fight to the finish as Global and Kaya seek their first United Football League title Tuesday in an explosive double-header befitting what has been a hugely successful season at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Global – a team hitting top form at the right time - takes on Loyola Meralco at 8 p.m., after Kaya battles Penson Stallion-Giligans in a match that could also decide which walks away with the coveted trophy.

With 41 points and a record run of 13 matches unbeaten, Global can clinch the title with a Kaya loss in the first game.

A draw could also be enough even if Kaya prevails as both teams will finish tied on points, although Global has a superior goal difference.

Still, Global needs a victory to stamp its dominance this season that started on a poor note when it lost two of their first four matches.

“We can’t leave our fate on the results of the other match,” Global manager Dan Palami said. “We want to end the season on a winning note.”

Kaya’s only chance is to win over Stallion and hope that the Sparks overcome Global.

The Sparks looked primed to be involved on the day of the title decider, until it imploded by losing and drawing their last two matches.

The Sparks would have bagged the crown had they swept their last three matches, including the match against Global.

It’s all behind them now and the Sparks will be looking to spoil Global’s march to the crown.

The Sparks beat Global, 4-3, early this season, but judging from the two teams’ current forms, it seems the leaders are the fancied side.

Loyola will welcome back skipper James Younghusband from suspension, after he missed the 2-2 draw against Nomads Auction Manila.

But Global will be without winger Misagh Bahadoran, who was sent off in the 4-0 victory over Air Force Phoenix.

Kaya coach Kale Alvarez will have all his standouts at his disposal with Masa Omura and Jason Sabio returning from suspensions.

One thing going for Kaya is the return of Aly Borromeo in the last three matches, although the skipper, who has scored twice since his comeback, is doubtful because of a knee problem.

Stallion already sealed fourth place last Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Army.

But the Ernie Nierras managed side will look to cement their status as a league powerhouse against Kaya, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Stallion in the first round.
