Sparks step up title chase; Army, Archers collide

MATCHES TODAY
(Rizal Memorial Stadium)
2 p.m. Army vs Green Archers Globe
4 p.m. Loyola Meralco vs Navy Red Juice

Loyola Meralco tries to close in on top spot as it battles Navy Red Juice Saturday at the resumption of the United Football League.

The Sparks are overwhelming favorites in the 4 p.m. clash at the Rizal Memorial Stadium after drubbing Navy, 14-0, in their first round clash.

A win by the Sparks will push them to second spot, a point behind Kaya which has a game in hand. The Sparks have four games remaining, including a duel with Global, which they would need to sweep to bag the title.

Global also needs to sweep its last three matches for a chance at winning the title.

Army and Green Archers Globe collide in the first game at 2 p.m. with both teams trying to avoid the relegation battle with Navy.

A win by Archers will allow them to leapfrog past Army at eighth spot and out of danger.

With 10 goals under his name, Archers striker Floriano Pasilan will be a marked man against Army, which is hoping to avenge a 0-2 loss to Archers in the first round.

Army will retain its spot in the first division next season with a victory over Archers.

Loyola has not played in almost a month with its last match ending in a 2-1 extra time win over Singapore League side Geylang United in the Singapore Cup.

But the Younghusbands as well as Roxy Dorlas and Anto Gonzales have stayed in top shape owing to their stint with the national team.

Navy will be looking to improve from its first round clash with the Sparks who hammered out a 14-0 victory against them. As it stands, the Sailors, who are coming off a 0-6 beating to Pasargad, are in danger of falling to the second division next season being at last place with only four points from 15 matches.
