| Chieffy brace lifts Airmen
Chieffy Caligdong struck two late goals as Air Force Phoenix blanked Pasargad, 2-0, Wednesday night to keep its flickering title hopes alive in the United Football League. In his third game back from a knee injury, the diminutive winger again delivered for the Airmen, who moved up to fifth with 11 points before their clash against Archers - their last game of the first round. Goalkeeper Tats Mercado also shone for Air Force, foiling a 58th minute penalty from Hamed Hajimahdi after defender Martin Doctora fouled Dibi Pascual inside the box. The Airmen looked headed for a second consecutive draw, before Caligdong struck. Deployed on the right side, Caligdong was released by a clever ball from Randy Bela-ong, before slotting the ball past an approaching Abdollah Golkah in the 87th minute. Pasargad threw more men forward in search of an equalizer, leaving spaces at the back that Air Force was quick to exploit. A swift counter attack again put Caligdong through against Golkah. And while his initial effort bounced off the post, the winger was first to the ball to follow up, making the scoreline more convincing. Air Force controlled the first half for long stretches, but lacked the cutting edge to break down Pasargad which was looking to bounce back from a 1-2 defeat to Navy Red Juice. Pasargad looked the more threatening side early in the second half particularly on the counter-attack but seem to run out of ideas on their final third. The newly promoted side absorbed its fifth loss in eight matches, but remain ahead of last place Navy in the table.
