Global survives Archers; Pachanga sets pace

An 85th minute penalty from Carli de Murga lifted Global past Green Archers United, 1-0, Sunday in the United Football League at the Nomads field in Paranaque.

De Murga struck it low and hard past Martin Villaflor as Global escaped with three points against an Archers side still looking for their first win of the season.

Global had been reduced to 10 men five minutes earlier when Jerome Sylvain, getting the start ahead of Paolo Pascual, was given his marching orders for a tackle on Gabriel Oloweyeye outside the area.

It was the second booking for Sylvain who was lucky to escape with a yellow on a closely similar challenge on Archers skipper Floriano Pasilan.

But Global's fortunes changed quickly as increased pressure led to a handball by Arvin Soliman inside the area.

Soliman was promptly sent off as he used his hand to keep out Misagh Bahadoran's goalbound effort.

De Murga, who had missed a penalty in the exhibition game pitting the national team and a Korean club a few weeks ago, made no mistake this time.

"We could still play better than this," said Global coach Graeme MacKinnon, ruing his side's lack of cutting edge to dominate Archers.

Global remained in fourth, level on points with Kaya, but Dan Palami's side has played one more game than Kaya.

Over at UMak, Pachanga kept its perfect record in the second division, coming from behind to edge Dolphins United, 3-2.

Robert Canedo scored from 25 yards out for the game-winner in the 75th minute as Pachanga notched its fourth straight victory.

Jerome Cuyos handed Dolphins a shock lead in the 6th minute, before Canedo equalized eight minutes into the second half.

Jalsor Soriano gave Pachanga the lead for the first time in the 68th minute, but he was sent off just before the final whistle.

Diliman stayed in second with a 4-1 drubbing of Agila.

Jose Andoni Santos took his tally to seven goals for the season with a brace, while Bismark Frimpong also scored two goals for Diliman, which jacked up its record to 10 points.

Cebu Queen City United posted a stunning 2-0 win over fancied Laos in another second division clash.

Rolly Lear's own goal in the 57th minute put the Cebuanos on their way. Rommel Cuizon sealed the win with his 76th minute strike, before Lear was sent off late on.

Archers were actually offered the better chances but Arnie Pasinabo and Tating Pasilan blowing opportunities in each half.

Pasilan only had Sylvain to beat in the waning minutes of the opening half but he can only shoot straight at the Cameroonian keeper.

Sylvain had to be alert to foil Pasinabo from just inside the box in the second half.

It was another heartbreaker for the Archers, who had lost three of their four games by just one goal.

Archers are still in ninth, ahead of Navy on goal difference.
